66.2 percent of the national territory has some degree of drought, and it rose by almost 10 percent between February 16 and 28. Aguascalientes, Colima, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Durango, Jalisco and Coahuila are the states that have between 95 and 100 percent of their territory in conditions that range from abnormally dry to extreme drought, reported the Drought Monitor of the National Meteorological Service (SMN). .

He explained that during the second fortnight of February, the passage of cold fronts 30 and 31 caused rains in the northwest, as well as throughout the states of the slope of the Gulf of Mexico, although the precipitations above the average were concentrated in Tabasco, southern Veracruz and northern Chiapas, where abnormally dry conditions decreased.

He added that there were precipitation deficits especially in the Baja California peninsula, the Sierra Madre Occidental and the north of Coahuila and Nuevo León. In addition, warmer than average temperatures were recorded in the central, western, and South Pacific regions.

These conditions favored the increase in areas with water scarcity, since the moderate to extreme drought increased in Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas; while abnormally dry conditions and moderate drought increased in the central, western and southern Pacific regions.

He detailed that the area with moderate to extreme drought was 23.1 percent nationwide, 9.95 percent more than what was reported on February 15.

Meanwhile, as of March 7, the storage of the three main dams of the Cutzamala System (El Bosque, Valle de Bravo and Villa Victoria), which supplies a third of the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico, stood at 58 percent, one percentage point less than last week. He specified that the El Bosque dam was at 56 percent full, Villa Victoria at 50.5 and Valle de Bravo at 62.6 percent.
