The Government of Mexico negotiates with that of Cuba to bring to the country a scheme of attention to the diabetic foot and, with it, avoid amputations.
This is a methodology, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, developed on the island, said the only nation that applies it.
During her morning conference, yesterday in the National Palace, the president pointed out that the goal is that this model be in Mexico, which includes a special drug, and that the number of diabetic foot care clinics is extended.
“Cuba has a medication and an care scheme to avoid very successful amputations. There are already diabetic feet clinics with this methodology, this technique, these medications, in some expanded health centers of the IMSS-Bienestar. And it is something very important for the country, because the theme of the diabetic foot is increasing,” he said.
The chief of the Executive insisted that he works with the government of the island to acquire the treatment.
“In particular on this issue, we will have greater collaboration with Cuba, because it is the only country that has this medicine and that has many results.”
He also indicated that his administration will continue with the agreement for the contracting of Cuban specialists – initiated in the six -year period of his predecessor, former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador – in order to provide attention to the most remote points of the country, which Mexican specialists do not even want to go.
“The Cuban doctors who are still here, we will continue, it is an established agreement, it has everything in order and we will continue with that.”
To respond to criticism about why professionals from Cuba are sought, the president stressed that she is the only nation willing to send her doctors to other countries.
He recalled that the determination of reaching that agreement with the island was reached because during the neoliberal regimes, doctors specialists in Mexico were ceased to train, which generated a deficit to cover the entire national territory.
Between 2012 and 2018 – before the governments of the 4T – in the IMSS it went from 3 thousand eight graduated specialists to 3,740, “that is, 700 more”. While from 2018 to 2025, he added, the figure increased more than double, with 7,427 of those professionals trained.
