The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a note on Tuesday night (9) in which it condemned the threat from the United States “using economic sanctions or threats to use force against our democracy “ Amid the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven defendants for the coup plot.
In the note, Itamaraty says the government repudiates any interference from other countries in Brazilian sovereignty.
“The first step in protecting freedom of expression is precisely to defend democracy and respect popular will expressed at the polls. This is the duty of the three powers of the Republic, which will not be intimidated by any form of attack on our sovereignty. The Brazilian government repudiates the attempted undemocratic forces to instrumentalize foreign governments to coerce national institutions,” the statement says.
United States
White House Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the US government considers freedom of expression a top priority, citing the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
“I have no additional action [contra o Brasil] To present to you today. But I can say that this is a priority for the government. And the president [Donald Trump] Not afraid to use the economic and military power of the United States of America to protect freedom of expression worldwide, “said the spokesman, as reported by Reuters.
“Bolsonaro family conspiracy”
In a speech in Manaus, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also cited the trial in the Supreme Court in which former President Jair Bolsonaro is a defendant for attempted coup.
Lula considered that the country is experiencing a delicate moment.
“He knows he committed the stupidity he committed (…) These guys had the pachorra of sending people to the United States to speak ill of Brazil and to condemn Brazil,” criticized Lula.
The Minister of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffman, criticized the United States Government Declaration on Force Use.
In a post on social networks, the minister said she came to the “cumulus” the “conspiracy of the Bolsonaro family against Brazil”, pointing to the articulation led by federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro for the US to sanction Brazil.
“The rates against our exports are not enough, illegal sanctions against government ministers, the Supreme Court and their families, now threaten to invade Brazil to deliver Jair Bolsonaro from jail. This is totally inadmissible,” the minister said.
