A man jumps from a cruise in Puerto Rico for not paying a debt for bets

A man faces a possible federal position in Puerto Rico for jumping from a cruciate ship anchored in San Juan and fleeing the sea to avoid paying a debt of more than $ 16,000 for concepts of bets and gambling.

As reported on Tuesday the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in San Juan, the entity denounced last Sunday to a citizen named Jey Xander Omar González Díaz for not reporting the income of more than $ 10,000 that he obtained outside the United States.

According to the accusatory sheet, González Díaz starred in the incident on the cruise ship Rhapsody of the Seasof the Royal Caribbean line, on dock four of the port of San Juan.

The emergency raised at about 09:15 local time (13:15 GMT), reported by officers of the Customs Office and Border Protection (CBP, in English) to the agents of the Office of Investigations of the Department of National Security (HSI) on the island.

Minutes later, CBP officers arrested González Díaz.

The judicial document details that González Díaz was sighted by some people on aquatic motorcycles who took him to the seashore to later be arrested.

At the time of his arrest, the accused carried a lump with $ 14,600 in cash, a handbag, two cell phones and five different identifications.

The special agent who wrote the complaint found that González Díaz used the pseudonym ‘Jeremy Díaz’ to board the cruise and that, under that name, he had a debt of $ 16,710, almost exclusively of casino activities and games expenses.

The defendant sailed from San Juan on August 31 and the last port where he was in Barbados.

The investigation later confirmed that ‘Jeremy Díaz’ is Jeremy Omar González Díaz, alleged brother of the now accused, and who has been imprisoned in the Federal Prison of Guaynabo since January 2025 for a case of drug trafficking and possession of weapons.

The statement also highlights that González Díaz, while being prosecuted by the CBP, told federal agents that he jumped from the ship allegedly because he did not want to report the money in understanding that he would be charged taxes.

González Díaz, however, was released on bail while the case is attended to the court.
