Madrid, Spain.- The opponent and leader of Cuba decides Rosa María Payá, recognized defender of Human Rights, confirmed her participation in the Conference “Save Cuba”which will be held next Saturday, September 13, at the Big Five Club, located at 600 SW 92 Avenue in Miami, Florida, between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm
The event is part of the celebrations for the 35th anniversary of the Cuban Democratic Board of Directors (DDC) and seeks to generate a space for reflection and commitment to the future of the island. According to the organization, the meeting aims to “combine a concerted effort by the release of Cuba” and bring together political, social and community leaders.
After the death of his father, the opponent Oswaldo Payá, In 2012 in circumstances reported as an attack by the Cuban regime, Rosa María has maintained a constant presence in civil society initiatives and campaigns that demand respect for fundamental freedoms on the island.
With an extensive experience in international forums and in agencies such as the Inter -American Commission on Human Rights, Rosa María has defended in various spaces the need to boost a democratic transition process in Cuba.
For the organizers, their intervention at the conference constitutes a relevant contribution of leadership at a time they consider decisive for the future of Cuba.
Support from Congress
The presence of Payá, founder of the citizen project “Cuba decides” and director of the Foundation for Pan American Democracy, It adds to that of Cuban American congressmen María Elvira Salazar (FL-27) and Mario Díaz-Balart (FL-26), who also confirmed assistance.
The participation of Cuban American congressmen adds a political component of relevance to the meeting. María Elvira Salazar, a television experience awarded several Emmy Awards, served as a correspondent in chains such as Telemundo and CNN in Spanish. Since his choice in 2020 as a representative for District 27 of Florida, he has been one of the most active voices in Congress regarding the situation of Cuba.
For his part, Mario Díaz-Balart, current congressman for the 26th district of Florida, integrates the Hispanic Conference of Congress and maintains a firm position in foreign policy towards Havana, defending the continuity of the embargo and support for internal opposition. His legislative career has made him a reference figure within the Cuban American community and a constant ally of initiatives seeking a democratic transition on the island.

The DDC in the democratic struggle
The DDC, non -governmental organization founded in 1990 during the International Cuban Youth Congress for a free Cuba, changed its name in 2002 to reflect its commitment to democratic values. Since its headquarters in the United States, it has offered support to opposition groups within the island, facilitated the access of international journalists to Cuban sources and promoted solidarity with the dissident movement.
Among his projects are campaigns such as “I do not cooperate with the dictatorship” (2005) and “not to the electoral farce” (2007), in addition to the annual publication steps to freedom and transmissions of Radio República, which daily disseminate alternative information to Cuba by short wave and am.
With the “Save to Cuba” conference, the Board of Directors seeks to commemorate its 35 years of existence and, at the same time, reaffirm the support of the diaspora and its international allies to the struggle for a democratic transition in Cuba.
