Brazilian justice approved the extradition of Rocco Morabito to Italy

The Supreme Court of Brazil approved on Tuesday the extradition of mobster Rocco Morabito to Italy. The narco leader had been captured in Brazil in May 2021 after having escaped from Cárcel Central in downtown Montevideo in 2019.

In the same hearing, the last appeal of the Italian’s defense was rejected, in which he requested to remain detained in the Federal Penitentiary of Brasilia, according to the EFE agency.

When he was arrested, the Uruguayan justice had already informed that, due to a legal situation, Morabito would be extradited directly to Italy to be tried by the justice of that country. At that time there was an international arrest warrant from the European country and that is why the Brazilian federal police could not order the expulsion.

“Uruguay is not going to request extradition so as not to hinder,” said the then court prosecutor, Jorge Díaz, at that instance, at the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior.

Morabito escaped on June 23, 2019 along with three other inmates. He had been in prison since 2017, while his extradition to Italy was being processed. Indicated as one of the capos of ‘Ndrangheta, the Calabrian mafia, he is accused of drug trafficking.

He left through the roof of the prison, entered an apartment on the fifth floor of the adjoining building, stole $3,000 from the owner of the house and took a taxi to a pizzeria in Punta Carretas. There he was waiting for a Russian citizen, who would end up being charged with concealment. Morabito then traveled to Minas and tracked it down until May 2021, when he fell in the Brazilian city of João Pessoa.
