Monsignor Álvarez: faithful have been threatened “to force them to manifest what they do not wish to manifest”

Monseñor Rolando Álvarez

The decision to go or not to vote is for Nicaraguans, in the context of the socio-political crisis that the country has been facing since 2018, it becomes more tense as November 7 approaches, said Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, bishop of the Diocese of Matagalpa. The bishop denounced – during this Sunday’s homily – that “some faithful” have informed him that they were threatened to “force them to manifest what they do not want to manifest, or to do what they do not want to do.”

The threats denounced by the religious are given a week before the general elections scheduled for next Sunday, which the blue and white opposition has called to ignore due to the lack of conditions for them to be fair, free and democratic.

“During these days I have heard from some of the faithful that, given the dramatic situation that Nicaraguans are experiencing, their decision has already been made in the inviolable dignity of their conscience. However, they state, they are threatened to force them to manifest what they do not wish to manifest, or to do what they don’t want to do, ”said Álvarez.

In this context, the bishop indicated to the Catholic faithful that “fear paralyzes and sickens” and that “no one or anything, threats, blackmail or actions and no type of intimidation can intervene in a decision made freely in the most sacred thing that we all possess. humans; awareness”.

Recently, the priest Uriel Vallejos, parish priest of the Divine Mercy Parish of Sébaco, Matagalpa, affirmed in a homily that he will not participate in the elections in which the Ortega-Murillo regime seeks to be reelected, because, he warned, the conditions do not exist for the process is free, fair, transparent, competitive and observed.

“This November 7 my footprint will be clean, like my conscience, because the opportunity to choose was lost in equal opportunities, where the competition was eliminated and some of them were put to act as opposition, “said the religious.

“Do not allow external impositions”

Álvarez exhorted the people to “do not allow, under any point of view, that external impositions interfere or try to violate those decisions already taken in the sacred interior, do not allow it.”

He also insisted that Nicaraguans “are a people with dignity, the dignity of the children of God who, despite all adversities and even when the doors have been closed to us, we still have that unbreakable force of inner freedom that it brings together again as a people, in the same thinking, in the same decision already taken and in the same decision ”.

Opposition groups and families of victims of the repression of the Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo regime have called, since last September, for aelectoral strike ”on November 7, in rejection of the elections that they point to are held without any type of guarantees and whose objective is the perpetuation of the Ortega regime in power.
