An Appeals Court issued an order that stops the dismantling of the Alcatraz de los Caimanes, the Trump Administration Detention Center located in the Florida Everglades.
In a ruling of 2 to 1, the Court of Appeals for the eleventh circuit revoked the order of a lower court that considered the site a threat to the environment.
Judges Barbara Lagoa and Elizabeth Branch, both designated by Trump, issued the majority ruling, while Judge Adalberto Jordan, nominated by Obama, dismitted.
“Specifically, we believe that the District Court erred when determining that the defense of undue jurisdiction was discarded because the defendants did not argue in their initial responses to the motion of a temporary restriction order,” reads the majority opinion.

Lagoa and Branch also determined that the government would suffer irreparable damage if the installation permanently closes.
“The defendants have shown that the court order of the District Court will inevitably compromise the ability of the DHS to keep criminal foreigners detained, protect citizens respectful of the law, enforce immigration laws and maintain border security. We believe that this is sufficient to demonstrate irreparable damage,” both wrote.
The Trump administration quickly celebrated the order. “A great victory for Aligator Alcatraz! Today’s order is a victory for the American people, the rule of law and common sense. This demand was never about the environmental impact of converting an urbanized airport into a detention center,” wrote the Department of National Security in a statement in X.
“It has been treated and will always be activists and judges in favor of open borders that try to prevent forces of order from expelling foreign criminals from our communities. Point,” they added.
Others criticized the decision and affirmed that the fight is far from ending. “The case is far from finishing. In fact, it just begins, and we are committed to keep fighting.”
“The court issued a limited suspension order. While it was disappointing, we never hope that the final success was easy. We hope that the preliminary order is confirmed when reviewed in terms of its merits during the appeal,” said Eve Samples, executive director of friends of the Everglades.
“Meanwhile, if the administrations [del gobernador de Florida] Desantis and Trump decide to resume operations at the detention center, they will only be wasting money, since this reckless installation, which is causing damage to Everglades, will finally be closed, ”he concluded.
