The chief economist of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Máximo Torero, stressed that in the Dominican Republic, the sub -healing was reduced from 8.7% in 2019 to 3.6% in 2025, standing below the regional average.
Similarly, bullfighter stressed that real labor income has grown above inflation, which has allowed to maintain and strengthen the purchasing power of citizens. As presented, this advance responds to the policies implemented in the field of salary increases, accompanied by social protection programs and improvements in agricultural production.
In his report, Torero indicated that food inflation in the country has shown a minor gap compared to general inflation, and even in the most recent section, has decreased faster. This combination with the rise in real wages has allowed the Dominican population to better in front of the increase in global food prices, guaranteeing greater access to healthy diets and a sustained reduction of food insecurity.

During his speech in the Regional Dialogue on Food and Water Safety: “An Agenda Mano de la Handa”, held at the Convention Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MILEX), President Abinader said that the reduction of the 3.6% sub -healing index in 2025 drives to continue coordination with all government institutions.

The president recalled the weekly meetings that he maintains with the “Zero Hunger Cabinet”, composed of the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Institute for Student Welfare (INABIE), the economic dining rooms and the social cabinet, where actions are coordinated to guarantee the food of the population.
President Abinader also highlighted the multiplication by four of the economic dining rooms, the significant increase in school feeding through the National Student Welfare Institute (INABIE) and the improvement of workers’ real salary.
Field strengthening has been key
On his side, the Minister of Agriculture, Limber Cruz, emphasized the role of the agricultural sector in the achievements, highlighting that the strengthening of the field has been key to reducing hunger in the Dominican Republic. He also noted that productivity has been promoted, supported by small producers and promoted sustainable practices, making the country a regional reference.
The agenda included two high -level panels: the first focused on the “hand hand” initiative to accelerate the transformation of agri -food systems, and the second into an exchange of experiences about the reduction of hunger and poverty.
The event was attended by Lucrecia Rodríguez, of the SICA; Manuel Torres, from BCIE; Francisco Bueso, from the World Bank; Mario González, of the IDB; Luis Felipe Barrantes, of the Social Assistance Institute of Costa Rica; Adriana Telles, of the CGSAN, among other important central government officials, the private sector and civil society.
The dialogue concluded with a call to strengthen regional cooperation and work together between governments, multilateral organizations and civil society, with the aim of guaranteeing the right to food and sustainable access to water in the region.
