In an unprecedented event for the capital of Quindío, the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (INPEC) celebrated the first wedding of the LGBTIQ+ community in the Armenian prison establishment.
The Union was made between a person deprived of liberty and his partner, consolidating as a milestone in the promotion of human rights within the Colombian prison system.
Inpec highlighted this event as an expression of love, dignity and equality, stressing that fundamental rights are not suspended with the deprivation of liberty.
For the institution, these types of ceremonies are part of the actions that seek to humanize prison life and ensure that people deprived of liberty (PPL) can exercise their rights in equal conditions.
An antecedent in Tuluá
Although it is the first time that such a fact occurs in Armenia, it is not the first marriage between a PPL and its partner in the country.
In October 2024, in the jail and penitentiary of half security of Tuluá, Valle del Cauca, a similar ceremony was held.
There, the civil union was highlighted as a gesture of hope and as an opportunity to strengthen family ties during resocialization processes.
Inclusion and rights in prison centers
The Colombian prison system has had advances in inclusion, although it still faces significant challenges. In 2019, for example, a “LGTBI reign” between women deprived of liberty, with the purpose of making diversity and promoting spaces of cultural integration was held in the same Criminal Criminal.
