Torture Group never fears loss of property for state alienation

The torture group never again (GTNM-RJ) and other social movements were surprised by the inclusion of properties where they work in a list for state alienation. Movements that develop activities of recognized social importance occupy properties that have been unused for years.Torture Group never fears loss of property for state alienation

In the case of the torture group never again, in October 1994 the State Government of Rio ceded the space where its headquarters operates, as a recognition of the activity of social interest began in 1985. During these 31 years, the space housed the GTNM-RJ, allowing the development of reception activities for victims of violence, the preservation of memory and the defense of human rights.

In a statement, GTNM-RJ, concerned with the danger of loss of headquarters, at 238 General Polidoro Street, in Botafogo, south of Rio, says that the inclusion of the property in the list of alienation puts it at risk the maintenance of the activities of an organization that is not for profit and does not receive any state financing, living exclusively from donations of people who sympathize with the historical struggle.

The importance of GTNM-RJ for Brazilian democracy and the strengthening of citizenship is recognized nationally and internationally.

“We claim that the real estate where the torture group never again, from Rio de Janeiro, and the other social movements affected are removed from the list and that each case is studied in order to ensure the functioning and social functions they perform.”

More than 800 civil society people have signed a petition to maintain the headquarters of torture never again in Botafogo, a place he has occupied for over three decades.

Survey

At a meeting held on Wednesday (3), the chairman of the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) of the Rio Legislative Assembly (Alerj), Deputy Rodrigo Amorim (Union), appointed Deputy Alexandre Knoploch (PL) as president of the working group that will deal with the matter. He said that in the coming days, surveys will be performed at the places of the properties listed for alienation.

Amorim anticipated that the expectation is that next week will be presented an initial report on this survey.

“The work has already begun and we are receiving in the Commission Crafts of the Bank, establishing which properties they want to exclude or include in the final text of this alienation. All these requests will be analyzed, while the project is processed in the first discussion,” said the CCJ president.

Among the properties listed for alienation are the Caio Martins stadium in Niterói; the Leblon Military Police Battalion; In addition to the headquarters of the Arco-Íris group, torture never again and the Villa-Lobos school.

In a statement, the State Government Civil House reported that “the bill sent to Alerj, which relates state properties, is authorizing. If approved, it will be up to the government to evaluate the need and the deadline for eventual sale, but always with special attention to institutions that provide services of relevant social interest, ensuring the continuity of their activities”.
