Less homicides and more support, Sheinbaum surpasses AMLO in his first report

Decrease in homicides

In the first Sheinbaum report, a slight decrease in malicious homicides is reported, with a monthly average of 2,014. While with López Obrador there were 2,879 every month.

Another key data in security is the confiscation of Fentanil, the drug that has faced Mexico and the United States. Here also the president surpassed her predecessor. In this management, 1,424 kilograms seized are reported, while in López Obrador’s first report one was not reported. In addition, the term was only mentioned once.

They contrast in budget and educational scholarships

Sheinbaum has said she wants to be remembered as the president of education, but in the first stage of her government the budget of the sector fell slightly. The federal education in education amounted to 1,131 million pesos compared to 1,453 million reported by López Obrador.

However, the number of scholarships for basic education students grew with Sheinbaum. During the 2024-2025 school year, 58,712 million pesos were exercised in the Universal Scholarship of Basic Education for the delivery of scholarships to 7.1 million families.

With the former president, 3.7 million households received support from the Benito Juárez Welfare Basic Education Scholarship Program, in which 13,000 million pesos were invested.

Sheinbaum resumed the scholarships to study abroad, criticized at the time by López Obrador, with 72,771. It also reported a 193% increase to support for scientific research projects.

The two administrations share something in common: the creation of new universities. López Obrador presumed the construction of 100 headquarters from the University for Welfare Benito Juárez, with 39,170 students enrolled until 2019.

Sheinbaum launched the National University Rosario Castellanos, which until June of this year had an accumulated enrollment of 57,441 students of higher and postgraduate education.

Two other university campuses are built in the State of Mexico. The president announced that the goal is to build units in all federative entities.

There are other changes in educational policy. In his first report, López Obrador celebrated his educational reform of May 2019, which created the unity of the system for the career of teachers (Usicamm). Now, in his own report, Sheinbaum takes up his promise to consult the teaching community to eliminate that agency, as the teaching demands.
