Santo Domingo, RD – The Dominican Postal Institute (INPOSDOM) announced on Tuesday the temporary suspension of merchandise shipments to the United States, in response to the recent elimination of tariff exemption known as of minimisimplemented by the US government since August 29.
This exemption allowed the free income of packages whose value did not exceed a specific threshold. However, with its elimination, All shipments aimed at US territory will be subject to the payment of customs taxes and tariffsregardless of its declared value.

Inposdom explained that the suspension will be maintained until the new official protocols are defined and the corresponding processes with the competent customs authorities are coordinated.
The measure It does not affect Correspondence shipments (letters and documents), nor the packages identified as gifts aimed at family or friends, whose value does not exceed the US $ 100provided they are clearly marked as “gift.”
The institution warned that delivery times could be extended due to additional inspections and that any inconsistency in the declaration of content or value could cause the return of the package to their country of origin.
INPOSDOM urged users to make their shipments transparently, correctly declaring their content and value, and to remain informed through official channels on new provisions related to this process.
Finally, the entity reiterated its commitment to an efficient, safe and adjusted postal service to current international regulations.
