Within the framework of International Women’s Day, the former Minister of Social Development, Leonor Calderón, referred to Law 4 of January 29, 1999, which establishes Equal Opportunities for Women, which is in force in our country for 20 years.
He pointed out that said law has a fairly good regulatory framework, however, it would be necessary to adjust some things that have been around for a long time and define what those big potholes are.
“Rights are and should be progressive. Both views are important, looking back and looking forward. We have to purge institutional issues, strengthening the institutions that address women’s issues at all levels”, she specified.
He indicated that it is important to recognize progress, but we cannot be satisfied with this alone. At the same time, she mentioned that the political participation of women in Panama is below average. “We have to continue insisting on that political participation.”
