The court of Italy upheld on Thursday (28) the arrest of federal deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP). According to information from the Attorney General of the Union (AGU), which represents the Brazilian government in the case, Rome’s appeal court considered that there is a risk of escape and decided to maintain the parliamentary’s pre -trial detention while the extradition request made by Brazil continues to be processed.
The court of appeal also considered that Zambelli’s defense was unable to prove the allegations of political persecution.
“According to Italian judges, Zambelli never seems to have cultivated real interests in Italy, as his ignorance of the Italian language demonstrates, which even required the appointment of an interpreter for the hearings,” said AGU.
The Italian judges also said that the health problems pointed out by the defendant’s defense do not prevent the maintenance of prison.
“In particular, with reference to depressive disorder, according to the decision, no evidence was found to suggest desire for self -conserving or anti -conservative behavior in the deputy, and other conditions such as a tendency to moodiness and sleep disorders can be treated and revised in therapies and consultations,” the agency added.

According to investigations, the hacking was performed by Walter Delgatti, who was also convicted and confirmed that he had done the work at the behest of the parliamentarian.
After the escape to Italy, the Brazilian government requested the extradition of the deputy to Brazil. Carla Zambelli’s extradition request was made official on June 11 by the STF. Then the request was sent by Itamaraty to the Italian government.
