#8M Women in Mexico work more, but earn less

less pay

After the pandemic, the number of women earning less than the minimum wage represented 30% of all female workers, that is, more than 6.8 million out of a total of 22 million women of working age. Before the pandemic, the percentage was 26%.

This proportion in working men was 20% in 2021, and in 2019 it was 15%.

More work

Lower income did not mean less work for women, according to the ENOE, the number of Mexican women with days longer than 35 and 48 hours per week reached record levels in the fourth quarter of last year: with 4,344 million, which represents the 19% of all women with employment.

Less working hours for professionals

Although at a general level, the longest working hours increased, for workers with upper secondary and higher educational levels, the full shifts were reduced. After the pandemic, this educational level was the one that reported the greatest increase in underemployed people, that is, those who are willing to work, but who do not do so due to conditions beyond their control.

During 2020, the peak year of the pandemic, this level reached a maximum with 2.2 million workers looking for more work hours.

Independent workers

23.6% of the female population that works does so on their own, that is, more than 5,261 million women at the end of last year, this represented 178,720 more women than in the last quarter of 2019, prior to the pandemic.
