Thousands of Colombians celebrated their day and demanded deferred rights

On International Women’s Day, Colombian women dressed in green and purple, raised flags and banners, enunciated slogans, sang and celebrated the recent ruling of the Constitutional Court in favor of abortion.

“You have to abort, you have to abort this patriarchal system,” chanted the massive women’s march that packed Calle 26, one of the busiest streets in Bogotá.

In statements to Prensa Latina, Claudia González highlighted the recent triumph of Colombian women for the decriminalization of abortion.

“It was a long struggle in which various social and political organizations joined together, especially women’s, for the right to autonomy of their bodies,” he stressed.

However, said the young woman, there are still many challenges for Colombian women, such as banishing machismo, violence against women, achieving equal rights in all areas.

From the Historical Memory Center of the Colombian capital, they went out to walk the streets to Plaza La Hoja, to close with a concert what was considered a sea of ​​women.

But these massive mobilizations also took place in cities such as Ibagué and Medellín, in the latter the riot police tried to repress the protesters.

“Friend, sister, if he hits you, he doesn’t love you,” was one of the most chanted slogans in the different demonstrations against violence against women.

Indigenous people, students, peasant women, Afro-Colombian women, women from the LGTBI community, came together to raise their voices for all their rights, against all kinds of discrimination and stigmatization.
