Feminist march commemorated 8M with clashes

Before reaching the Plaza de Santo Domingo (downtown Quito) the march was paralyzed by altercations with the Police.

At 5:30 p.m., from The Tree Parkin the center of Quito, began the march that each year commemorates the International Women’s Day, The 8th of March.

About 300 people walked shouting slogans about respect for reproductive and sexual freedom and demanding that the president, Guillermo Lasso, not veto the bill that regulates abortion for rape.

Stunned with the Police

When the route advanced along Guayaquil street, a group that was leading the march managed to tear down a fence that guarded the route towards the Plaza Grande.

Right away, heto National Police came with shields and horses. The shields were painted purple and cans and other blunt objects were thrown at the police. The soldiers used gas to dissuade the women, who had to return to the original route to go to the closing point of the march: the Santo Domingo Square.

Along the way, there were those who painted walls with phrases like “girls are girls, girls are not mothers”. (AVV)
