The stones at Bishop Street, where numerous tourists in Havana

Havana/A Pedrada, two, three … The marks in the stained glass windows that adorn Bishop Street, in the heart of Havana, tell a violent story that is repeated in several shops, from small notches to large cracks. The most recent of the cracks discovered it last Friday the workers of the Fayad Jamís bookstore – the number 261 of Pedestrian Street – which denounced vandalism to the police, fearful that one day the pedrada arrives when they have the door open.

“Just when our bookstore arrived at 15 years at the headquarters of Bishop, an Orate, of those who abound down the street and throughout the city, undertook it devastating stones against stained glass,” he told 14ymediounder condition of anonymity, a habanero aware of the facts and linked to the world of culture. The brands can be seen from the street: two big blows on the front that combined the glass and one side with a hole. Located just behind the crime scene, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, portrayed on book covers, are the only witnesses.

According to the Havana, “it is not the first time that these events occur in bishop” or in Fayad Jamís. The same crystal shows another war wound in the upper part and in the center, matched with preint, there is another hole.

“The person who did this the police stopped her and released her, because according to them she had mental problems. He is someone who had already done this before, but is still loose,” he explains. The lack of measures by the authorities has nervous to the employees of the bookstore. “The workers are scared because the police do nothing and do not know if they are working again.”

If things continue as until now, he regrets, “it can be expected then that other establishments suffer identical consequences – as has already happened – and even passers -by being injured.”

Last May, as could verify 14ymediothe bookstore already had at least two stones. A month later, in June, the La France store, located at the corner of Bishop and Avocato, suffered the same destination: at the top of one of the side crystals a stony had cracked the glass.

“The amount of insane and pordiosos who daily assault the capital streets is increasingly alarming and will be much more as long as the medications and institutions that provide attention to those people continue,” criticizes the Anonymous Havana.

In the case of Fayad Jamís, he thinks, the situation is truly painful and not only puts workers and clients at risk, but will end up depriving the habaneros of one of the best preserved bookstores on the island.

Inaugurated in that second location on August 28, 2010, “The bookstore is a national prestige center at the national level. The National Book Distributor, the Cuban Institute of the Book and the Ministry of Culture, should not let its decline begin after the capital reparation he received in 2021,” says Havana. “The Cuban culture, the readers, the Havana, we deserve that our library resurfaces of what is today to be ashes.”
