Taissia Cruz Parcero resigned from the Directorate of the Federal Institute of Public Defensoría (IFDP), an agency under the Judiciary, after two and a half years in office, which had to conclude in 2026. Last Thursday he reintegrated himself to his magistrate square in the eighth collegiate court in criminal matters of Mexico City.
In January 2023, by decision of Norma Lucía Piña, then president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), Taissia Cruz, opponent of judicial reform, was appointed head of the IFDP replacing Netzaí Sandoval Ballesteros. The Federal Public Defensoría Law indicates that the appointment of Director General lasts three years with a re -election.
In accordance with the IFDP regulations, the head of the Criminal Defense Unit, Juan Alexis Rojas Hernández, – who was secretary of Cruz Parcero in said collegiate before assuming the ownership of the Public Defender’s Office – will be responsible for office until the new judiciary makes the appointment. It transpired that the head of the Strategic Litigation Unit in Human Rights, Jaquelín Sáenz Andujo, also resigned.
In October 2024 Taissia Cruz presented to the Senate a letter where he declined to participate in the judicial election. He argued that he believed in the independence of the judges and in the defense of human rights.
Last Wednesday, he pointed out in his social networks that he concluded his functions as director of the IFDP and that “the Federal Defensoría is a strong institution that gives results in favor of the rights of people. I make votes so that those who happen to us have the wisdom of continuing to strengthen it and to work without greater interest than that of users”.
The magistrate also sent a letter of thanks to the workers of the IFDP: “Last Monday I informed the Board of Directors that the Federal Judiciary Council favorably agreed to the request that I submitted to conclude my commission of General Director of the Institute.”
He added that since August 28, the court of his assignment was reinstated, in which he hopes to conclude his career as a federal magistrate in 2027 “provided there are conditions to do so with independence, autonomy and dignity.”
Until December, the Institute had 886 federal public defenders (578 men and 308 women), who provide criminal representation services in the 32 entities. All enabled to act in the accusatory criminal system. In Federal Criminal Justice Centers, 295 public defenders work.
In 2023 and 2024 the Public Defensoría promoted 4 thousand 502 requests for revision of the informal preventive detention of which they resolved 1,810 in favor.
Likewise, in this period 95 thousand 744 were recorded to defense of persons in the accusatory criminal system with 22 thousand 471 favorable resolutions, and the formalization of 17 thousand 202 alternative mechanisms of dispute solution.
Additionally, the Ombudsman attended 6 thousand 135 representations in criminal cases according to the traditional criminal system, obtaining 524 favorable resolutions.
