Lula wants to reinforce the engagement of Amazonian countries at COP30

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is on his way to Bogotá, Colombia, where he participates, this Friday (22), the 5th summit of the organization of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (OTCA). The meeting must update the commitments of the countries that share the largest tropical forest on the planet in the protection of the biome. It will also be an opportunity to engage the neighbors in the Effort to participate in the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30)in Belém, Pará, the first performed on Amazonian soil.Lula wants to reinforce the engagement of Amazonian countries at COP30

One of the initiatives of the Brazilian government is precisely the approval of a joint statement of Fund Support Tropical Forests Forever (TFFF)which will be released on COP30.

The fund will be a financing mechanism, in the expected amount of US $ 125 billion, designed to preserve these forest biomes, present in about 70 countries, which are crucial for the regulation of the rainfall and carbon capture in the atmosphere.

Lula arrives in the Colombian capital late of this night. The first official commitment It will be representatives of the member countries of the Amazonian Cooperation Treaty with civil society organizations and indigenous communities, around 9:30 am on Friday, followed by the summit. The activities will take place at Nariño House, headquarters of the Presidency of Colombia, in Plaza de Armas.

The initiative of dialogue with civil society entities repeats the methodology adopted 2 years ago, in anterior edition of the Otca Summit, in Belém.

Lula and Colombian President Gustavo Petro are the only two heads of state confirmed in the summit. The other countries sent chances.

On the Brazilian side, Lula accompany the ministers Márcio Macedo, of the General Secretariat of the Presidency; Sônia Guajajara, of the indigenous peoples; Marina Silva, from the environment and climate change; Mauro Vieira, from Foreign Affairs, and Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, president of COP30.

In addition to the statement in favor of the TFFF, the OTCA summit shall approve the Bogota letter, reinforcing countries and commitments of countries in actions such as the fight against deforestation and sustainable development of the Amazon.

Before returning to Brazil, Lula will make a statement to the press.
