OAS expects Pacification de Haiti would cost 2.6 billion dollars

Washington, USA.-The general secretary of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, yesterday presented a road map to combat the humanitarian crisis that Haiti is going through, focused on local leadership with coordinated international support between multilateral systems such as cartoon and the United Nations.

It is projected that the implementation of the shares will require a budget of 2.6 billion dollars.

“The document presented to them is no more, or less, than a starting point, a constant evolution step towards a comprehensive framework focused on addressing Haiti’s situation immediately,” Ramdin said in a session of the permanent council of the OAS.

This is the first point of the road map, which stipulates that its implementation will be directed by national institutions.

Even so, these will have international support and the coordination of the different multilateral organisms such as Caricom, the United Nations System and its specialized agencies, the Inter -American System and other donors, in addition to the OAS.

“Success depends on coordinated and sustained international support,” adds the plan, which establishes five pillars for its strategy in Haiti.

The first of the objectives will be to stabilize the insecurity situation that affects the island nation and boost progress and continue its progress later.

The road map insists on the need to immediately get safe corridors and protect safety in critical infrastructure and in gang controlled territories.

The second focuses on supporting the Transitional Presidential Council until February 2026, which seeks to guarantee free and fair elections, during which the OAS plans to display a mission with twenty electoral experts.

The humanitarian response is the fourth of these pillars, prioritizing food safety, water, sanitation and hygiene and health services. And finally, that the promotion of economic progress focuses on the principles of sustainable development.

In the last general assembly of the OAS, held in June in Antigua and Barbuda, the United States urged member states to increase their contributions to the multinational security mission deployed last year in Haiti.

The UN reports 4,026 murders
Other data. According to UN data, Haiti recorded a 24 % increase in intentional homicides in the first six months of the year, reaching a total of 4,026 murders.

In addition, the violence of the bands has caused the internal displacement of about 1.3 million people.

More than a million Haitians, including a large number of children, are internal in the Caribbean country.

At least one in three Haitians in the Metropolitan Region of Puerto Príncipe, controlled in 90 % by armed bands, has been forced to take refuge in unhealthy camps, to leave the capital to go to other safer cities.
