BCP scholarships: "This year we have decided to focus on university scholarships"

The program BCP scholarships He launched his fourteenth call to finance access to the education of talented young people without opportunities. Verónica Roca-Rey, who leads the program, details Peru21 The achievements achieved.

This is the fourteenth year of BCP scholarships. What is coming?

This year we have decided to focus on university scholarships. We are working with Tecsup due to the institutional proximity and the high labor demand it has, but most scholarships will be aimed at universities, because that is the preference of the boys. In addition, we seek to expand the scope in regions. At this time, we work with the University of Piura (UDEP) in Piura and Tecsup in Arequipa and Trujillo, and we are evaluating new alliances to continue growing in the regional level.

How many scholarships do they expect to provide this year?

Between 80 and 100 scholarships. Our allied institutions are the University of Lima, the Pacific University, the PUCP, the UDEP, the UPC and the UTEC. In addition, this year we have incorporated into the National University of Engineering (UNI). The careers we seek to finance include administrative sciences such as economy, finance and administration, as well as various engineering.

What is the participation of the provincial fellows?

Currently, our fellows portfolio is distributed by 60% from Lima and 40% of regions. We believe that a good balance would be to reach 50% and 50%. In addition, the boys who come from the province are given a support. Therefore, the interest of expanding regional scope not only obeys the importance of decentralizing educational opportunities, but also of an efficiency issue in the use of resources, since we must cover that additional support.

Considering that UNI is a national university, what facilities do scholarships provide?

We work with the UNI through its Board of Trustees. Although it is a university where no pension is paid, we have identified a space to support the boys who come from outside Lima or who live very far and have no resources to cover their transport and material costs, which puts the continuity of their studies at risk. While they have food at the university and some facilities, many can spend up to three hours in public transport because their families live far or are temporarily housed in family homes. That is the profile of students we are looking for.

Does support to UNI students come alone on the side of the maintenance?

No. Many careers in the UNI sometimes require equipment that students cannot afford. So, if they need, for example, a special laptop, we can support them. It is a smaller budget program compared to the rest, but it is very significant for these boys. The Uni profile is very tromes.

When does the call of next year begin?

It was opened on July 8 and will be available until January 6, 2025. These scholarships are aimed at boys who start the first cycle of their studies in March 2026.

What are the requirements to postulate?

First, it is a scholarship that we call it “access”, because it is for young people who have not been able to access higher education and that the school has finished maximum three years ago. In addition, we seek to meet two important criteria. The first is the desire and mood, because that is reflected in a good academic performance. The Ministry has changed the evaluation system; It is no longer measured by the upper third, but we ask that almost all the notes are AD and A, with perhaps a small space for a B.

What is the other requirement?

The other criterion is the economic need. We seek to support boys who could not access higher education without this scholarship. In addition, they must have achieved entry to one of the allied universities through the modality accepted by the program. Then, they go through an evaluation process: they participate in psychometric tests and, who reach the required score, advance to a phase of interviews. This is how we finally select our 80 to 100 fellows.

What has been the reception of the program so far?

It has been very important. Last year we received 5,000 applications from interested boys.

How do they measure the performance of the program?

We measure it with several indicators. The first is how many boys achieve their first job after graduating, obviously in formal companies. There we have a very high rate: 99%. In a second moment, we measure how many are currently working, and that indicator is also high, about 90%. In addition, we have set ourselves as a goal to increase the rate of fellows that work within the group (Credicorp). It is not a condition of the scholarship, but we want them to see us as the best place to work. Currently, we are in 25% and we will work on how to attract more of these talented boys.
