PMA reduces half -food program due to lack of financing

The program will not be able to continue with the School Meal Plan in the Trujillo, Yaracuy, Barinas, Anzoátegui and Monagas states


The World Food Program (PMA) reported on Wednesday, August 20 that it will reduce the scope of its program in Venezuela this year because the “financing is not enough.”

«It has been a very difficult decision that we have taken after exploring and trying many options. He will not be able to continue with the School Meals Program in the Trujillo, Yaracuy, Barinas, Anzoátegui and Monagas states, ”said Lucía Ruz, associate of United Nations programs, in a video published on Instagram.

In February 2023, the PMA approved the 2023-2025 Strategic Plan for Venezuela for 573 million dollars to strengthen school feeding, as reported by the permanent representation of Venezuela before the UN Organization for Agriculture and Food (FAO).

The project also includes food assistance for people in conditions of greater vulnerability, support in the management of climatic risk, strengthening of resilience and infrastructure of food systems, as well as the capacities of organizations and institutions.

The objective, according to its website, was to support more than one million people with food assistance by the end of 2025.

Venezuela and PMA signed a cooperation agreement on April 19, 2021 to provide nutritional schools for minors in vulnerability, in addition to educational centers staff.

Last June, PMA reported that it distributed food to more than 7,000 people in a municipality in the Venezuelan state in Apure (west, border with Colombia), affected by heavy rains.

In addition, he reported, in an Instagram publication, which supported more than 200 people with food in temporary accommodation centers and providing polypropylene bags to civil protection to contain the flood of rivers.
