With demands for equality, rights and against gender violence, the march scheduled for Tuesday afternoon began March 8 in Montevideo, on the occasion of the International Women’s Day.

The march had one of its concentration points in Plaza Independencia. Also in the Plaza Cagancha and in the esplanade of the Municipality of Montevideo, where the colors black and violet predominate.

There are detours in traffic by cuts on 18 de Julio Avenue, from Plaza Independencia to Magallanes Street, in front of the Plaza de los Treinta y Tres. Transport lines and traffic in general circulate through the closest parallel streets. The mobilization will also be directed towards the boulevard.

In the run-up to the march, the PIT-CNT Gender Secretary, Flor de Liz Feijoo, responded to criticism of a “political strike” and said: “They have complained that working women are politicizing this day. Aren’t women the ones who stretch our very meager salary to make ends meet? But later our president (Lacalle Pou) says that the prices of commodities, which is exported, is exported, with increasingly higher international prices. Could it be that they don’t want us to wake up to the fact that some gold mesh is doing it all? Let us not be confused”he pointed.

In addition, De Liz Feijo requested through a proclamation that the right of women to strike be recognized. She also criticized the articles in the Law of Urgent Consideration (LUC). “If they pay us a low salary, if they criminalize us, do we have to shut up?” She questioned, to the applause of those present.

Pereira, for her part, said that this Tuesday morning a group of women toured neighborhoods reporting on the LUC’s articles, “which mainly hit women and the most vulnerable,” she said.

It is a “space for everyone, the call is for everyone. It is made by the PIT-CNT but it does not take over anything,” Pereira clarified, when asked about the statements of the Vice President of the Republic, Beatrice Argimonabout which the date was “politicized”.

“They get on the bandwagon of a historic march, where the interests of the PIT-CNT were not always represented,” said the hierarch this Tuesday morning at a press conference.
