Brazilian goalkeeper Fábio, from Fluminense, made history, on Tuesday night (19) at the Maracanã stadium, when entering the field to face América de Cali (Colombia) for the South American Cup: he became the player with the largest number of matches played in the history of world football.
Upon entering the field to face the Colombian team, the 44-year-old Fluminense archer, reached a total of 1,391 career games, surpassing former English goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who was sporting the mark of 1,390 matches.
In his longest career, Fábio defended only four teams: Cruzeiro (976 matches), Fluminense (235 matches), Vasco (150 matches) and União Bandeirante-PR (30 matches).
The list of the five players with the largest number of games played in football history is made up of four goalkeepers and one striker. Fábio is the first with 1,391 matches, the second is Peter Shilton with 1,390, the third is Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo (the only one, Fábio, who is still active) with 1,283 games, the fourth is the Brazilian goalkeeper Rogério Ceni with 1,265 clashes and the fifth is the goalkeeper Czech František Plánička with 1,187 clashes.
