The head of the Customs Customs Unit of Guyana (Canu), James Singh, denounced on Tuesday, August 19 that most of the drug enters from Venezuela and that the country is a point of transford for smuggling.
Singh revealed that these narcotics mainly have international markets in Europe and Western Africa, according to the statements published by the Public Information Department.
The Head of Canu emphasized that Guyana is not a cocaine producer, but due to its geographical location, it is increasingly used as a transit point by drug cartels.
«Previously, we have seen drugs enter Guyana to North America. Recently, however, there has been a change. Now drugs are directed to Western Africa and Europe, ”said Singh.

In this regard, he explained that the increase in police presence and patrols in the Caribbean have made the route to North America more dangerous for traffickers, who now look for alternative corridors.
Canu has detected drug trafficking attempts that involve aircraft that fly at low height, load containers and various types of boats, even semi -submersible, to evade their detection.
«They arrive from Venezuela by plane or boat. It does not help (Venezuela) be a narco -esteem and claim two thirds of our territory, ”said Singh.
To combat drug trafficking, Singh said that Canu has carried out several successful joint operations that have resulted in important drug seizures, while participating in intelligence -based international collaborations.
«We cannot fight alone. We fight an enemy on different fronts. It is a network, so alliances are key, ”he said.
In the international arena, the CANU collaborates directly with the United States Drug Control Administration (DEA), and with agencies from the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, France and Surinam.
Less than a year ago, the president of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, requested international aid with “resources” to deal with the drug loads that fly over and land in the country.
The call occurred days after they found a stash of 4.5 tons of cocaine buried on an illegal landing floor located in region one, the largest seizure made in Guyana to date and valued at 200 million dollars.
