Mexico has high natural gas dependence that is imported from the United States, president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo admitted.
Faced with this, he pointed out that Pemex analyzes options to strengthen national production and aim towards self -sufficiency from techniques that do not have environmental impacts, so it has created a working group for such objective.
“Most of the natural gas consumed by Mexico comes from Texas, from the United States (…) But there is an important issue, which is the dependence we have of natural gas: it is much,” he admitted in the morning of yesterday. He added that Texas has a lot of this fuel, so its cost is “very low.”
The president indicated that natural gas is used in the industry, in homes – although little, because they continue to occupy the conventional – and mainly in the generation of electricity, supported by combined cycle plants.
“One of the actions we are developing with Pemex is to strengthen sovereignty in natural gas. What does that mean? Produce more in Mexico. There are still conventional gas deposits in the country and its viability is being seen. There is still gas, although it is contaminated with nitrogen in Cantarell; it would have to decontaminate. And there is the theme of the Fracking (Hydraulic fracturing), ”he said.
He explained that Pemex, in coordination with the Mexican Petroleum Institute, integrated a working group to study new forms of exploitation of this fuel that do not impact the environment and, at the same time, strengthen self -sufficiency and energy sovereignty, so it ruled out that its government can apply the Fracking under the conditions that are currently carried out, due to the damages that it would entail.
“Obviously, the gas exploitation scheme Shell or of the Fracking, As is, it cannot be used because it has very serious environmental impacts and, in addition, it is in areas where there is little water.
“Now there are many new techniques that have nothing to do with these forms (Fracking) that we would have to analyze; Nothing is determined and the population must be made. ”
On the other hand, he affirmed that gasoline shortage in some parts of the country was a thing of a few days and is already resolved.
A problem was given in the hiring of pipes to distribute the fuel and, in the case of Chiapas, because a pump for the premium failed.
He criticized the informative media that on the one hand they presented the issue of shortage as a crisis already censored Pemex’s support to Cuba with the sending of oil before the energy crisis facing the island. “What does one thing have to do with the other?” He asked.
