Three American destroyers with guided missiles Aegis will arrive at the coast of Venezuela in the next 36 hours as part of an effort to address the threats of Latin American drug cartels, two informed sources on the matter said on Monday.
President Donald Trump wanted to use military forces to prosecute Latin American drug traffickers who have been designated as global terrorist organizations.
An American official told Reuters that, in total, it is expected that around 4,000 sailors and marine infants commit themselves to the efforts of the Trump administration in the southern region of the Caribbean.
The official, who spoke on anonymity condition, said that the additional commitment of military assets in the broader region would include several P-8 spy airplanes, warships and at least one attack submarine.
He said the process would last several months and that the plan was to operate in international airspace and international waters.
Naval assets can be used not only to carry out intelligence and surveillance operations, but also as a launch platform for selective attacks if a decision is made, the official added.
The Venezuelan Ministry of Communications did not respond immediately to a request for comments. Without referring to the warships, Nicolás Maduro declared Monday in a speech that Venezuela “will defend our seas, our heavens and our lands.” He alluded to what he called “the unusual and strange threat of an empire in decline.”

Trump has made the fight against drug cartels a central objective of his administration as part of a broader effort to limit migration and ensure the southern border of the United States. In recent months he has already deployed at least two warships to help on border security and drug trafficking efforts.
The Trump Administration appointed the Sinaloa Cartel of Mexico and other drug traffickers bands, as well as the Venezuelan criminal group of Aragua, as global terrorist organizations in February, while intensifying the application of immigration laws against alleged members of bands.
The American army has already been increasing its air vigels of Mexican drug cartels to collect intelligence to determine the best way to counteract their activities.
