Journalist Víctor Ugas turns a year: "I ask that the truth be heard"

The mother of the journalist Víctor Ugas, who is detained in the Tocorón prison, requested respect for due process, «that the truth is heard and that my son’s fundamental rights are respected. He is innocent of those charges »


The National Press Workers’ Union (SNTP) denounced that on Monday 18, the journalist Víctor Ugas completed an arbitrary detention year, amid judicial irregularities and health problems that have not been properly addressed.

«The last year has been hell. My son is sick, stressed, in depression and with constant crises of asthma. He has spent all this time detained unfairly, without a fair trial and without respect for his human rights, ”said the journalist’s mother, Yris Azócar.

Azócar He indicated to the SNTP that he saw it for the last time on June 27, when his son had a month with fever without receiving adequate medical attention.

The 37 -year -old journalist suffers from chronic asthma and for months he suffered severe carotiditis that was treated “after a long insistence,” said Azócar.

Víctor Ugas was arrested on August 18, 2024 after a confrontation with the Tiktoker Emmanuel Marcano in a Caracas nightclub. Shortly after he was filed before the courts. In September of that year he was transferred to the Tocorón prison, in the Aragua state.

The union said that Uugas, charged with the alleged crimes of incitement to hatred and minor injuries, the preliminary audience was suspended on 11 opportunities. After seven trial hearings, the judge of the case was changed “which further prolongs indefinition about his case.”

«I ask for due process, that the truth is heard and that my son’s fundamental rights are respected. He is innocent of those positions, ”said Azócar.

The journalist is the father of a four -year -old boy. In addition, her younger sister is diagnosed with 13 rare diseases. The journalist’s mother lives in Carúpano (Sucre State), so she faces huge difficulties in visiting her son due to her own health problems and economic burden.

«This has been a year of rage, of horrible depression. There are days when I don’t want to leave my house. It has cost me a lot to continue living, ”confessed the journalist’s mother, who has taken refuge in the Church and receives psychological assistance to cope with the burden.

Despite adversities, he hopes that justice prevails. “We only ask for a fair decision and that my son’s human rights are respected.”
