Refuge of emblematic species such as the glasses of glasses and the real eagle, this mountain is a symbol of environmental equilibrium.

News Colombia.

Colombia keeps a natural show that surprises the world: imposing snow -covered volcanoes that rise at the top of the Andes mountain range. These mountains are not only a symbol of beauty and majesty, they also play a strategic role such as water regulators, wildlife and scenarios of great cultural and historical value.

Among all the snowy volcanoes, the snowy of Huila rises as the highest in Colombia with 5,364 meters high. Located in the Nevado del Huila Natural Park, this volcano protects the most extensive glacier mass of the central mountain range and the second largest in the country, only surpassed by the Sierra Nevada del Cocuy. Its importance is vital: it is a water star that feeds the basins of the Cauca and Magdalena rivers, two of the largest in the national territory.

In their skirts, ecosystems of great wealth are hidden, where species such as the rabbit deer, the danta of Páramo, the glasses of glasses and the royal eagle inhabit. In addition, its territory was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, and is home to indigenous communities that retain ancestral traditions in harmony with the mountain.

Other snowy volcanoes that mark the history of Colombia

Nevado del Ruiz (5,321 m): one of the best known for the tragic eruption of 1985 that swept harmony. Today is a Volcanic Research and Surveillance Center.

Nevado del Tolima (5,220 m): Perfect cone, is one of those preferred by national and foreign mountaineers.

Nevado de Santa Isabel (4,965 m): Tourist and scientific attraction, although its glacier is in serious decline for climate change.

Nevado del Cocuy: part of the El Cocuy National Natural Park, considered one of the most impressive landscapes in the country, with more than 25 snow -covered peaks.

Each snowy volcano in Colombia has its own charm and biodiversity, but face a common challenge: the accelerated setback of its glaciers due to global warming. This situation not only threatens its unique landscape, but also the availability of water and the ecosystems that depend on them.

The snowy volcanoes of Colombia are much more than mountains: they are guardians of water, life and culture.
