Marina and Indeci alert anomalous waves throughout the Peruvian coast from August 18 to 22

The Marine of Peru, through the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation (Dihydronav), reported that the Peruvian coast will record light waves to moderate intensity between Monday 18 and Friday, August 22.

The phenomenon will affect the northern coast, central and south, with variations in its arrival and intensity according to the area.

According to the special notice No. 37, on the northern coast the waves will be presented from Monday night 18. In the south, they will begin in the afternoon of the same day, reaching moderate level on the morning of Tuesday 19 and reducing to light from the afternoon of Wednesday 20.

In the case of the Center Center, the phenomenon will have two different phases. From southern Salaverry to Chancay, waves will enter on Monday night; While from southern Chancay to San Juan de Marcona, they will begin in the morning of the same day. In both sections, the intensity will reach moderate on Tuesday 19 and gradually decrease from Wednesday 20 in the afternoon.

Dihydronav explained that this type of event is part of the natural dynamics of the Pacific Ocean, although its recurrence can affect productive activities and represent a risk for coastal communities, especially those linked to fishing, tourism and minor navigation.

Prevention recommendations

Given this panorama, the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) urged regional and local authorities to guide the population in the adoption of protection measures.

The institution recommended suspending port and fishing activities, particularly those carried out by minor vessels. He also suggested to secure the ships or remove them to the mainland while the alert lasts.

He also asked to avoid sports and recreational activities in the sea, such as surfing, swimming or water motorcycle walks, and not installed near beach areas to prevent accidents and losses of goods.
