The head of the capital government, Clara Brugada, summoned the more than 30 countries participating in the 16 Regional Conference on the Women of Latin America and the Caribbean to undertake the “construction of a network of care cities”, which allows “to return their time to women to do with them whatever they want.”
At the table guidelines for care policies from a gender, territorial and intersectional perspective, Brugada explained that it is “incredible” that in these times women continue to dedicate an important part of their life in unpaid and domestic care work, to such a degree that “it seems disguised slavery”.
All that work “is not recognized, does not value, is not paid” and means a “great sacrifice” for them, so it is time for this situation to come to an end. He added that the sexual division of labor and inequality in the distribution of care are the main mechanisms that have perpetuated gender inequality.
The capital president said that it is necessary to “deepen the changes that help fight inequalities”, and emphasized that “it is the historical moment to achieve it.” He recalled that last Monday there was a set of reform initiatives regarding the constitution of Mexico City, where since 2017 there is recognition of that right.
He explained that it was proposed to modify article 9, on the title of Solidarity City, “and we have added that taking care, being careful and self -care are human rights protected by the Constitution of Mexico City. With this we attend the recent call of the Inter -American Court of Human Rights, which for the first time recognized care as an autonomous right, defending it as basic and universal need, and exhorting all states to guarantee it”.
He announced that in two weeks “the Economic Support Program for the Caredary Persons” begins in the capital, a strategy that accompanies the process of building transformative spaces for the population of the population. “
He stressed that the capital of the country has 15 utopias and the same number of houses of the 3R, which are part of the care system to recognize, reduce and redistribute the unpaid workload that women perform mainly.
