With the commitments it was agreed that the protected area will now be a “great trinational reserve” and it was announced that it is established on August 15 as the “Day of the Great Mayan Jungle.”
Within the framework of the meeting he gathered in Calakmul, Campeche, to the president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo; John Antonio Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize, already Sheinbaum, the governments of the three nations guaranteed the protection of the tropical jungle for the benefit of two million settlers of the three nations.
As a specific measure with that same objective, Sheinbaum announced the new phase or reactivation of sowing life in those neighboring nations.
This second stage of the program “seeks to regenerate soils, recover forest coverage in those places where it has been degraded and foster food self -sufficiency, but above all it seeks to raise the well -being of the communities that for years have sustained the link between them and the earth,” said the president.
This program is “a concrete form, in addition to this decree, of cooperation that drives rural development, protects ecosystems and improves the living conditions of the inhabitants of this area,” he said.
Briseño, Prime Minister of Belize, said that with the announced corridor it is intended to protect the jungle. “Mexico, Guatemala and Belize show that our political borders do not divide.”
Arévalo explained that the execution of the project will be in charge of the Council of Authorities of Protected Areas, and the members will be designated by the three governments.
“The proposed model will be supported by environmental organizations, the business sector, the academy and civil society in the Trinational Group to support this initiative,” he said.
Sheinbaum for his part celebrated: “Today’s agreement is historical, it is beautiful.”
After the declaration, a video was issued to explain the impact of it: the Gran Trinational Reserve will consist of 27 Natural Protected Areas of Guatemala, 12 from Mexico and 11 of Belize.
Some of the species that inhabit that territory and will be protected are the jaguar, the red macaw, the tapir and the quetzal.
