To celebrate International Women’s Day, an event organized by the Secretariat for the Promotion of Policies for Women offers services and activities at the Rio Art Museum (MAR), in Praça Mauá, the city’s port area. Activities will take place throughout the day.
Women who attend will be able to to have access to services such as issuing documents and registering in the single registry, in addition to signing up for a job at the employability fair, which offers 300 vacancies.
The Secretary for the Promotion of Policies for Women, Joyce Trindade, explained that, throughout the month, the March Women’s Month campaign will be replicated in various places in the city.
“We held an event in downtown Rio de Janeiro to ensure that women can get here. But beyond that, we will hold several events in public squares, to guarantee the right to the city. We will do events in the west, north, center and south zones. Thus, all women, regardless of the situation they are in, can reach our actions and understand that these events are not only divided in central places, but for the whole city”.
The mayor, Eduardo Paes, highlighted that March to haveThere will be a series of meetings, events, tributes and discussions on gender equity.
“This is a very important issue, which we can never forget, we still live in a sexist society, we see violence against women as something that is still very present”.
The bilingual receptionist Ana Claudia Santos, 40, heard about the fair on the radio and came to apply for a spot. A resident of Coelho Neto, in the north of the city, she has been unemployed for three years. “It is very difficult to get a job, I have been unemployed for three years. I heard it on the radio and came to the event to try an opportunity. I am confident that I will leave here employed”.
The event will end at 18:00 with a samba circle.
Elza Soares
On the occasion, a new mural was inaugurated at MAR, a graffiti by the singer Elza Soares, who died on the January 20, made by the artist Rafaela Monteiro. She highlighted that the struggle of women has always been present in her works.
“To be able to represent, on the day of todayin a place like the Museu de Arte do Rio, Elza Soares, this powerful woman who represents the essence of the Brazilian woman, of struggle and of everything she has been through, for me is the personal realization of my work and everything that I believe”.
Very emotional, Vanessa Soares, Elza’s granddaughter, thanked the tribute.
“It is difficult because it is very recent [a morte de Elza], but Elza was always a very strong, very powerful woman, a woman who knew how to overcome the pain to continue living, showing that we women are power, we women can command the world. Even because the world only exists for us, who are mothers. We women must to have Elsa’s strength. We are women of Elza and Elza is still present with us”.
