For a walk in Venezuela: Díaz-Canel’s son also travels

Miami.- Miguel Díaz-Canel Villanueva, son of the Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, He joined the official delegation that traveled to Venezuela to participate in the commemorative events for the birth of Fidel Castro, held this week in Caracas and headed by Nicolás Maduro.

The images, disseminated by Telesur, show the young musician sitting next to the Venezuelan dictator and surrounded by senior Cuban officials. In the transmission it was presented only as “Miguel Díaz-Canel son”, without specifying a position or function within the delegation.

The presence of the musician in a political appointment caused a wave of questions in social networks, where users wondered if he attended as an artist or as an official representative, and if his trip was funded with public resources in the midst of the deep economic crisis that the island crosses.

The participation of Díaz-Canel Villanueva in this type of international tours follows the example of Manuel Anido, stepson of the president, who has accompanied the dictator on official trips abroad, which has generated criticism for alleged nepotism and privileges within the presidential family circle.

Cuban journalist José Raúl Gallego He ironized about the fact, pointing out that state money is destined “to the trips of the nenes and the portfolios of the Machi” instead of covering urgent needs such as medicines, fuel or food. “Remember it the next time you take your province to ‘touch’ the son of Canel with his group,” he wrote in X.

Díaz-Canel Villanueva leads the Musical Group of Cuba and is part of the Brothers Saíz association, with which he has toured and meetings with young artists in several provinces. Although he does not occupy political positions, in August 2023, during a visit to Camagüey, he urged to “work to save art” and “put it based on the growth of the country”, statements that contrast with the complaints of censorship and repression of independent creators.

The commemoration in Caracas coincided with the 99th anniversary of the birth of Fidel Castro. During the act, Maduro insisted that both nations must remain “more united than ever” against what he described as the “supremacists of the gringo empire.”
