Nuevo León was at the lowest level of extreme poverty in almost a decade: Inegi

Monterrey, NL. In the measurement of multidimensional poverty 2022-2024 of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), Nuevo León occupied the second national place in the reduction of extreme poverty, only after Baja California.

According to the agency, in 2018 the proportion of people in extreme poverty in the state was 0.7%; However, with the pandemic this indicator increased to 2.1%. In 2022 it was reduced to 1.1% and by 2024 it was 0.5%, the lowest level of almost a decade.

Governor Samuel García Sepúlveda attributed this decrease to economic growth and a comprehensive social policy aimed at guaranteeing rights and reducing deficiencies.

He pointed out that the entity maintains the first place in various economic indices and stressed that the so -called “Nuevo León Model” – a joint planning scheme between the government and the private sector with long -term goals – has been replicated by other states.

In the case of the moderate poverty situation, the percentage was reduced by half, in 2020 it was 22.2% and in 2024 it fell to 10.1%; while the population with inferior income to extreme poverty lines also decreased from 7.3 to 2.5% in the same period.

The above, despite the fact that the population has had rapid growth, from 5.8 million in 2020 to 6.1 million in 2024.

How to reverse the poverty situation?

Martha Herrera González, Secretary of Equality and Inclusion, said that the results achieved through the Nuevo León model are due to coordinated and transversal work of the different levels of government, which is strengthened with alliances with civil society organizations, academia, companies and international organizations.

At the beginning of the current state administration, 1 million 435,000 people were counted in poverty and this figure was reversed, since 776,000 people improved their income, that is about 85 percent.

“This reduction impacts the quality of life of people (more vulnerable) 173,000 women left poverty behind, they already have income and access their rights; 40,000 older people live their old age with peace of mind and not with anguish,” he said.

He said that more than 120,000 young people accessed dual education and incentives to undertake; About 15,000 children under five improved their development conditions, and 34,000 people with disabilities had access to inclusive employment, education and services.

Decreases mortality rate, cancer coverage

For its part, the Secretary of Health, Alma Rosa Marroquín, indicated that the strategy “take care of your health”, impacted the 12.6% reduction the health expense of the population of Nuevo León, unlike what happened nationwide, where 8 percent increased.

According to the National Household Revenue and Expenses Survey (ENIGH), of INEGI, Nuevo León is the federative entity with less deficiencies in health services.

With the implementation of universal coverage for girls, boys and adolescents with cancer, the infant mortality rate of 5.61 in 2022 to 3.02 in 2024 per 100,000 inhabitants under 18 years of age was reduced.

When the administration began, in October 2021, the breast cancer mortality rate was located at 26.5 deaths per 100,000 women over 25 years old; At the end of 2024, the rate was 22.8, that is, 3.7 percentage points fell.

In addition, with the implementation of the Infarto Code, a decrease in infarction mortality of 30% to less than 20 percent was achieved.

Another advance is that the maternal mortality rate was reduced, from 55.1 in 2021 to 19.60 in 2024, said Marroquín Escamilla.
