Santo Domingo.-The energy demand record was combined yesterday with the unexpected exit of the Punta Catalina generator to generate an energy deficit that allowed electricity distributors to supply only 90 percent of what users required by users.
The electrical system registered its largest peak yesterday afternoon, exceeding 4,000 megawatts with the aggravating fact of not having the 376 megawatts that Punta Catalina II had to contribute.
The historical record of energy demand occurred in August 2024, when it rose to 3,726 megawatts, being now surpassed by placing itself above 4,000 megabytes according to the national electrical system report.
The combination of both factors have caused blackouts in numerous circuits, especially in the so -called “decks.”
The situation is expected to be corrected during the weekend with the entry into service of several minor generating units, while the Unified Council of the distributors says that the inconveniences of Punta Catalina will be resolved as soon as possible.
The renewable energy generation units also achieved a historical record yesterday by producing more than 1,700 megabytes, which to some extent mitigated something of the deficit aggravated by the exit of Punta Catalina II.
The generation of the country remains dominated by thermal sources, especially those that work with fossil fuels or gas, although the participation of renewables has been rising.
The Punta Catalina thermoelectric plant (CTPC) is today a key piece of the system. With two units of 376 MW each (for a total of 752 MW), it is the largest thermal plant in the country.
In addition, both units are located in the first positions of the order of merit of the electricity office for having lower operation costs, which makes them priority to supply the national energy system.
