In the middle of deep pain, Sergio Yepes, father of Esteban Yepes Palaciosaid the tragic moment when his 19 -year -old son was killed in Itagüí, Antioquia, by a street inhabitant. The young man, a native of the municipality of Concordia, had left on the afternoon of last Monday, August 11, to walk his dog “to the turn of the house”, when he was attacked surprisingly by a man who, according to the authorities, asked him for a coin and, upon receiving a refusal, stabbed him in the back on the neck. The young man died immediately in the place.

Esteban, who had graduated from El Rosario de Itagüí school in 2024, was in English studies and was in the search for jobs to finance his entrance to the university, where he dreamed of studying business administration. According to his father, he was a quiet, responsible and cheerful boy, without problems with anyone. “I just wanted to work and get ahead,” he said in a broken voice.


The crime shocked both the inhabitants of Itagüí and those of Concordia, their hometown, where family, friends and neighbors have expressed their outrage and have organized symbolic acts to demand justice. The news of the murder was rapidly spread on social networks, generating a citizen clamor for stricter security measures and attention to the problem of street inhabitants with criminal records.
Thanks to the rapid reaction of the authorities, in a joint operation between the Police, the Army and the Itagüí Security Secretariat, the capture of the alleged murderer in the municipality of Envigado was achieved. The man was identified as William de Jesús Cadavid, 77, who, according to preliminary reports, would have several judicial annotations for different crimes.
For Sergio Yepes, the loss of his son is irreparable. “Neither one, nor anyone, could happen to him. It is very hard,” he said. His testimony, loaded with sadness, has been disseminated by different media, making visible not only the case of Esteban, but also the risk that thousands of citizens face due to sudden attacks on the streets.
The case is already in the hands of the judicial authorities, while the family expects the process to advance with speed and that the person in charge receives an exemplary sentence. Meanwhile, in Concordia, the community has convened a Velatón in honor of Esteban, as a way to keep their memory alive and demand that facts like this are not repeated.
