Demand widely exceeds generation capacity and effects will be maintained for 24 hours.

Madrid, Spain.- La Cuba Electric Union (UNE) He informed that the national electrical system is maintained under strong pressure due to the service output of two key units: Unit 5 of the Máximo Gómez Thermoelectric Central, in Mariel (Artemisa), and Unit 1 of the Ernesto Guevara Thermoelectric Central, in Santa Cruz del Norte (Mayabeque).

These breakdowns are added to the structural limitations of the system, causing that yesterday – August 12 – the affectation of the service was extended for 24 hours and continue throughout the morning of this Wednesday. The maximum affectation was 1 576 MW at 8:20 p.m., a figure higher than planned by an unforeseen demand increase.

According to the UNE report, the solar production of the 25 photovoltaic parks reached 2,506 MWh, with a 457 MW at noon. However, this contribution does not compensate the general deficit.

This Wednesday’s informative note details that the generation availability is 2 040 MW, in the face of a demand of 2 917 MW, which currently causes an impact of 907 MW. For noon, an increase to 950 MW affected is expected, and at the night peak schedule the projection is 2 195 MW available to an estimated demand of 3,600 MW, which would generate a deficit of 1 405 MW and an affectation of 1 475 MW.

The blackouts, which in several provinces exceed 20 hours a day and in Havana they range between six and more than ten hours, continue to affect homes, hospitals and productive centers, and generate a growing social discomfort.

So far from 2025, at least four national blackouts have been recorded that have left Cuba completely in the dark for several hours. Meanwhile, the regime maintains censorship about official protests and misinformation, without allowing free access to technical data or independent means.

On June 28, more than half of Cuba was in a blackout due to a 1907 megawatts deficit (MW), the greatest affectation that has been recorded in the midst of the energy crisis (not including simultaneous collapses throughout the island).
