During the fiery chamber of the senator Miguel Uribe Turbayinstalled in the National Capitol, an incident was presented that briefly interrupted the ceremony. A member of the presidential guard, who remained next to the coffin as part of the Honor Protocol, suddenly collapsed before the look of attendees, family members and colleagues of the legislator. Witnesses pointed out that the uniformed man dressed in the regulatory gala suit, had shown signs of discomfort minutes before losing his balance. The temperature within the enclosure and the prolonged time in a firm position would have been determining factors in the fainting. Immediately, other guards and medical staff present in the Capitol came to help him.
The coffin of Miguel Uribe Turbay, covered with the flag of Colombia, was in the center of the elliptical hall, surrounded by a symbolic escort of the presidential guard and members of the Armed Forces. The act had been solemn and continuous since the morning, with long lines of people who wanted to give their last goodbye to the senator, killed last weekend in an armed attack in Bogotá.
The guard was transferred to a medical care zone within the Capitol, where basic reviews were practiced. According to sources close to the Military House, the uniformed man recovered quickly and did not present serious complications, although he was removed from the guard to allow resting and avoiding a relapse.
The episode, which was captured by some cameras and cell phones, quickly spread on social networks, where several users sent solidarity messages to the young soldier. The demanding conditions faced by the members of the presidential guard during official acts, which need to remain motionless for long periods, regardless of climatic conditions or tiredness, were also recalled.
Despite the incident, the ceremony continued without major setbacks. Government’s high personalities, Congress, political parties and diplomatic representatives continued to arrive to pay tribute to Miguel Uribe Turbay. The burning chamber will remain open until the morning of August 14, when the coffin will be transferred to the Primada Cathedral for the funeral and subsequent Mass.
