The coup on the Peruvian economy of low labor productivity has worsened with the increase in the number of Holidays. The industrial sector already has the first figures of its losses.
Although an additional holiday could involve more time for leisure, not everyone agrees.
An Urban-Rural Survey of Ipsos Peru, held this month, revealed that 41% of Peruvians consider that it must be worked on August 6, holiday by the battle of Junín. Likewise, 47% said they are in favor of being working on July 23, holiday for Air Force. Similarly, for 48%, on December 8, holiday by the Immaculate Conception, you must work.
In the case of the holiday by the battle of Junín, the consensus that it must be looked that day has more strength in Lima (49%) than in the interior of the country. And by socioeconomic levels both A (47%), B (48%), C (46%) and D (45%) preferences for working in said holiday are important.
Similar behavior occurs with the holiday for the Air Force Day. In Lima, more than half of the population (54%) considers that it must be a holiday. A similar level is maintained in the NSE B (54%) and C (50%).
As for the holiday by the Immaculate Conception, the percentage of Peruvians who consider that it must be working is similar in Lima (49%) and provinces (48%). And the consensus is higher in the NSE C (52%), D (49%) and E (47%), which are the segments of the highest concentration of the population. Therefore, it suggests that the authorities carry out an evaluation of the convenience of continuing to maintain these days without activity.
Industrial impact
According to the National Society of Industries (SNI), the last four national holidays that entered into force since 2022 have generated, to date, losses accumulated by S/6,000 million, affecting the productive chains of various industrial sectors.
The estimates made by the Institute of Economic and Social Studies (IEES) of the SNI took into account the holidays by the Battle of Ayacucho (in force since December 9, 2022), the battle of Junín (since August 6, 2022), the day of the Peruvian Air Force (since July 23, 2023) and the day of the flag (since June 7, 2024 Production paralyzes.
“Each new holiday implemented since 2022 has caused an average of S/500 million in losses to national production,” the guild estimated, after specifying that with the implementation of the four new holidays, Peru is the country of Latin America with the largest number of days offered per year: 30 days of vacation and 16 holidays
National
This situation is critical if it is taken into account that productivity per worker in our country is lower than that of Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil and Colombia, according to a recent ECLAC study, which is associated with the poor quality of public services.
Even the number of holidays in Peru is greater than in countries such as the United States (11), France (10), Germany (9), Spain (9) and England (8), which have higher income and standards of life.
Although some of the new holidays can fall on Sunday, the SNI warned that in some manufacturing sectors the production cannot stop, since the plants operate in three continuous shifts and require keeping personnel in each.
Therefore, he stressed that the new holidays affect the sector, because the labor regulations require each worker to pay the triple of their usual remuneration, “which is unsustainable for many companies, especially for the MYPES,” said the guild.
Consequently, the SNI proposed to commemorate the aforementioned historical or ephemeris dates without interrupting work activities, as in other countries. In that line, he proposed to restore work normality and leave without effect the last four holidays, considering the needs facing the country.
