Minister of Justice: "Chinería Island is Peruvian since 1922"

The Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Enrique Alcántara, said that The State has reinforced its presence in the Chinería Island, Located on the border with Colombia, and stressed that this territory belongs to Peru since 1922.

The statement was given after a Colombian flag was raised in the area, a fact that described as “provocative” and must be resolved by diplomatic channels.


During an interview with TV Peru, Alcántara reiterated that, for the Executive, there is no conflict of limits with Colombia. “The president is informed of this unfortunate situation. We hope that this issue will be solved by diplomatic route, as appropriate,” she said.

The head of the Minjusdh indicated that a legal device is being prepared to allocate the necessary resources to maintain and strengthen the state presence on the island and in the rest of the border area.

Regarding the placement of the Colombian flag, Alcántara said that these types of acts do not contribute to solving the situation. “With the technical, legal and diplomatic arguments that Peru manages, it will be clear that Chinería Island is Peruvian territory, not from now on, but since 1922,” he emphasized.

The statements were offered from Huánuco, where the minister fulfilled official activities, such as the supervision of the region’s prison and the delivery of a five -story property for the Judiciary.
