Marlene Orué, representative of the Liberal Party (PLRA), highlights that the 21st century was declared by the United Nations Organization (UN) as; “the century of women”. So it is time for more women to occupy decision-making positions.
“Although in some countries it is a reality, in others women still face an environment of inequality in terms of work, health, employment, home and rights, to mention just a few aspects,” she explained.
She points out that it is time for politics to have a woman’s face. Since we are in a country where everyone praises the Paraguayan woman, but she herself does not hold decision-making positions.
“The trend of equity and non-discrimination is already underway, but it is important to accelerate the process and that more and more areas join this dynamic, there are women leaders in all areas; businesswomen, political scientists, writers, actresses, journalists, athletes, philanthropists, and entrepreneurs, among others, but we need more,” she commented.
LIBERAL CONVENTION
This Sunday, March 13, the Liberal Convention will take place. On the occasion, the conventional will decide if the percentage of female participation in the lists of candidates for the next elections is increased from 33% to 50%.
“We are working to approve parity in the PLRA statutes. We have a joint share of 33%. This means that each list must contain, at least, 33% of integrated women. That is why we ask, from the platforms of led feminists and liberal women, that it be expanded to 50% ”, she affirmed.
Orué, in addition, integrates the group of women of the agreement. She is present there in the women’s team and in the legal team. The objective of both groups is that there is also parity within the agreement. That is to say, that all the lists can be integrated 50% by women.
This Sunday, at the liberal convention, the first item on the agenda will be whether or not the PLRA will be part of the concertation. The second item on the agenda will deal with whether or not to increase the percentage of female participation. The day will start at 09 in the morning and will take place in the municipal sports center of Caacupé.
POLITICS
The interviewee states that agreement is the option most accepted by citizens. Therefore, the opposition must go as a block to dispute the next presidential elections. Regarding female participation, she stated that there will always be negative comments, but this should not discourage female applicants.
“They are going to tell you that it is not the moment, that with those no, that it is not the way, that it is not possible, they are going to tell you no many times. The voices of no always repeat the same speech. We say that we are half and that we want parity now”, he affirmed.
LABOR PARITY
Finally, he reflected on the parity that exists in the workplace in our country. He considers that Paraguay is a very unequal country. And that this gap is accentuated in women and youth.
“They are the ones who suffer the most from inequality and misinformation. We must vindicate young people and women. Giving them equal opportunities in all spaces, political, labor, social. Because we are the majority and we are the most excluded, ”she said.
Finally, he encouraged his peers to become active in politics, to be leaders and not give up in the face of adversity based on his personal experiences.
“Getting excited is the key. It is a matter of decision will and persistence. Don’t be afraid to accept challenges. Leadership is a matter of decision, of having the grit and the will to take charge of problems. Fight so that other people have the same opportunities as others, ”she concluded.
