The official would have incurred “prevarication” by proposing sentences that are “long and unfair” and respond to a “script scheduled by the Political Police.”
Miami, United States. – The Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba (FDHC) included in its list of “Cuban repressors” the Provincial Prosecutor of Artemis, Niurka Margarita Tabares Valdés, for being the one who requested “unfair and severe” sentences of up to 10 years in prison against three members of the opposition group Cuba first.
According to the FDHC, the prosecutor requested joint sanctions of ten, eight and five years in prison for Daniel Alfaro Frías, José Antonio Pompa López and Lázaro Mendoza García, respectively, for the alleged crimes of “propaganda against the constitutional order” and “associations, meetings and illicit manifestations”.
The oral trial against the three activists It was held at the Popular Municipal Court of Guanajay On August 5 and was concluded for Judgment.
The FDHC argues that Tabares Valdés incurred “prevarication” by proposing sentences that are “long and unfair” and respond to a “script scheduled by the Political Police.”
The accusation against the three opponents was based on the cast of octavillas with messages against the government. The Prosecutor’s Office claimed that the defendants were “financed and directed from abroad”, which, according to the FDHC, obeys the official narrative not to admit that citizens within the island oppose the regime.
On the other hand, the NGO indicates that the figure of “Propaganda against the constitutional order”, incorporated into the Cuban Criminal Code in December 2022, contemplates sentences between three and ten years of deprivation of liberty for those who “encourage social order, international solidarity or socialist state”, by oral or written means.
The FDHC warns that dozens of people have been convicted in Cuba under this position, even for opinions expressed in social networks.
The organization also details that Tabares Valdés is responsible for violating article 10 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rightswhich guarantees the right to a just trial before an impartial court.
The project Cuban repressorsthat collects information on Cuban officials involved in repressive acts, aims to “denounce, collect (…) personal data and embarrass” to those who issue sentences “Destroyers of Lives” to maintain privileges granted by the regime. “Although there is a price to pay, the option to say does not always exist. It is better to choose it now, before it is too late,” concludes the FDHC.
