“Because of recent public statements made by your excellence, in which Brasilia was comparatively mentioned to locations internationally recognized by high rates of violence, it is necessary to clarify, based on official data, that such perception does not reflect the reality of the Brazilian capital,” wrote Ibaneis.

In the document, the governor cites data from the Atlas of Violence 2024, produced by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea) and the Brazilian Public Security Forum, which show that Brasilia registered, last year, a rate of 6.9 homicides for every 100 thousand inhabitants – third minor among all capitals in the country. “This result represents a historic landmark and reflects assertive public policies.”

“Recently, I even promoted a meeting with governors from several Brazilian states, with the objective of defending the opening of direct dialogue with the US government. During the meeting, the need to reduce tension between the two countries and that there is a coordinated performance with the National Congress, aiming to minimize damage to the national economy,” added Ibaneis.

On Monday (11), Trump announced federal intervention in the safety of the US capital Washington, claiming that violence in the city would be out of control. The Republican ordered the withdrawal of homeless people and criminals from the streets of Washington.

Justifying the measures, the US President said that crime in the US capital exceeded the one registered in several global capitals, classified by him as “worst places in the world”-including Brasilia.

Mexico City

Another capital cited by Trump is Mexico City. In response, Mayor Clara Brigada stressed that the Mexican city recorded, by 2024, a homicide rate of 10 per 100,000 inhabitants – 60% less than in Washington where, according to her, more than 27 homicides were accounted for per 100,000 inhabitants.
