Agricultural sector grew 5.0% in January, according to Midagri

In January, the had a growth of 5.0%, compared to the same period of 2021, as reported by the (Midagri).

In the first month of the year, it was observed that the increase in the agricultural sector was driven by the higher production of the Agricultural subsector (+6.2%) and the Livestock subsector (+3.3%), which contributed to the recovery of the countryside and the provision of food to markets.

The growth of the agricultural subsector was basically promoted by the greater production of blueberries, which grew by 119% (greater acreage in production in La Libertad and Lambayeque); parchment coffee +109% (larger area in production and earlier harvests due to favorable weather in San Martín, in the province of Rioja) and hard yellow corn +32.4% (larger area harvested in San Martín, Piura and Ucayali).

A better performance was also seen in oil palm production, which increased +30.2% (new areas that came into production in Ucayali and San Martín); avocado +15.9% (early production in Arequipa); plantain +7.0% (larger area under production in Piura and San Martín); mango +4.9% (greater production in Piura), among others.

As for the livestock subsector, in this period the highest growth was observed in the production of: chicken that grew by 5.0% (in Lima, La Libertad and Arequipa), raw milk cow +2.1% (greater number of cows in production in Cusco, La Libertad and Ica), pork +2.8% (in La Libertad, Ica and Lima) and chicken eggs +1.4% (in Ica, Lima and Arequipa).

Last year, despite the impacts of COVID-19 and the pandemic crisis, the agricultural sector grew by 3.8% in 2021.
