In recent days, the price of a quintal of flour has increased from 165 to 210 bolivianos in the Bolivian market and the bakeries have declared a state of emergency. In this regard, the Food Production Support Company (Emapa) ensures that there is enough wheat to guarantee supply.

The increase in the price of flour is one of the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which also affects other countries in the South American region such as Argentina, Chile and Peru, among others.

“Yesterday we met with all the sector leaders in which it was decided to declare a state of emergency since yesterday, because the price of a quintal of flour on the market has risen disproportionately. What used to cost 165, 160, today that same flour costs 200, 210 bolivianos, and to top it all off, there is no flour that can be on offer in grocery stores,” baker leader Dandy Mallea told Red Uno.

In this regard, the general manager of Emapa, Franklin Flores, guaranteed the supply of flour in the Bolivian market and assured that the country has 130 thousand tons of wheat stockpiled to produce 1.6 million quintals.

“We guarantee all the flour required by the bakery sector. To date, Emapa has 130,000 tons of wheat stored in the silos of the Bolivian State. Let them stay calm, we have the necessary wheat to grind 1.6 million quintals of flour to distribute to the baker brothers,” Flores told the media.

However, Mallea pointed out that Bolivia does not have the capacity to satisfy the internal demand for flour 100 percent and indicated that only 45% of what bakers require is covered by Emapa, but the remaining 55% is purchased on the market. What does the product matter?

The leader announced that they will analyze the possible modification of the bread price scale, a key product of the family basket.

The rise in the price of flour also affected Argentina, where an increase of 70% was reported. While in Chile the raw material rose 21.89% and in Peru its price went from 122 to 136 soles.
