Life and trajectory of Miguel Uribe Turbay, a politician marked by violence

It's official: Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay announced his presidential candidacy

The presidential senator and candidate, Miguel Uribe Turbay, who died early Monday, August 11, more than two months after being the victim of an attack on his life last Saturday, June 7, while he was in one of his political campaign activities in the West of Bogotá, he was one more victim of the historical violence of Colombia.

In 1991, with just 5 years, he lost his mother, The journalist Diana Turbay, who died in a failed rescue attempt, after being kidnapped by the Medellín cartel led by Pablo Escobar.

In the midst of that confusing rescue operation, Turbay lost his life and left Miguel and his sister María Carolina Hoyos orphaned.

“I forgave all who were involved” In that crime, Uribe said in 2021 in an interview with Bocas magazine.

He added that “Reconciliation is the only thing that helps one to take the step and overcome such a difficult time”.

Miguel Uribe grew up to a family with political power, because his grandfather, Julio César Turbay, was president between 1978 and 1982.

Uribe Turbay studied in one of the best schools in Bogotá, became a lawyer and finished a master’s degree at Harvard University.

Political trajectory

Since then, Miguel Uribe began an extension political career despite his age (he was 39 years old).

In 2012 he was elected as councilor of Bogotá when he was 25, after campaigning with other liberal politicians such as David Luna, Juan Manuel Galán and Simón Gaviria, son of former president César Gaviria.

Then, Uribe Turbay was a councilor for opposition to the government of then Mayor Gustavo Petro.

In his first year as a councilor he was elected by journalists as a revelation councilor, and later in 2014 he became the president of this district council upon receiving 32 votes of the 45 votes available.

In 2016, when he was 30, he was appointed as Secretary of Government of Mayor Enrique Peñalosa, becoming the youngest secretary of government in Bogotá’s history, after receiving the support of the then vice president of the Republic Germán Vargas Lleras to occupy said position.

Two years later, in 2018, he resigned from the position of Secretary of Government to aspire to the Mayor’s Office of Bogotá in 2019.

His candidacy was registered independently by the significant movement of citizens ‘We advance’, which had 400,000 signatures endorsed by the Registry. Different sectors and political parties such as the Liberal Party, Conservative Party, Colombia Free, Mira, in addition to the Democratic Center were added to its campaign.

On December 5, 2021 it was confirmed that Miguel Uribe Turbay would lead the list to the Senate of the Democratic Center. On that occasion he was chosen on March 13, 2022 under the premise ‘First Colombia’, managing to be the most voted senator in Colombia.

Father and husband

Miguel Uribe is the father of a two -year -old boy and has a motto that repeats as Mantra: “Colombia has a future”.

The natural leader of the Democratic Center, former president Álvaro Uribe, considers him a “Hope of the Homeland”.

It’s a “Great husband, father, son, brother” and “co -worker”said the ex -president who ruled between 2002 and 2010.

When he aspired to the mayor of Bogotá, in 2019, Miguel Uribe defined himself as a “transparent” politician without “corruption scandal.”

At that time, he promoted the hard hand against crime as a way to solve the security problems of the city and the fight against drug use.

The attack against him marks one of the darkest episodes of Colombian politics in this century. In 1948 and between the 80s and 90s, five presidential candidates were killed.

In most cases, the drug trafficking posters allied with other politicians and state agents were alleged behind the crimes.
