They will judge in the US the former Secretary of Security of Mexico

Mexico, Mar 8 (Prensa Latina) After almost three years of debate, it was confirmed today that Genaro García, former Secretary of Public Security of Mexico, will be tried in the United States on October 24 for serious drug trafficking crimes.

Said Secretariat reported that the virtual hearing before Judge Brian Cogan in the Federal Court of the Eastern District of New York established that the parties will deliver their lists of witnesses that they will summon for the trial, as well as evidence materials.

The source indicated that negotiations continue on whether the jury should be anonymous and partially protected during the trial, while the next preliminary hearing was scheduled for May 25.

Federal prosecutors informed in writing before the hearing that they proceed with the collection and evaluation of evidence.

They noted that they are awaiting responses to legal requests for more documents sent by the US government, both to the defendant and his companies and to various governments to incorporate into the evidence.

Prosecutors said they have already collected more than a million pages of documents and intercepted communications for the case.

García is accused in the United States that between 2001 and 2005, when he headed the Federal Investigation Agency, and from 2006 to 2012, as Secretary of Public Security of Mexico under the government of then President Felipe Calderón, he accepted millions of dollars in bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel in exchange for granting protection for drug trafficking activities.

The charges include involvement in a criminal business, various counts of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, and making false statements.

The defendant was arrested in Dallas by federal agents on December 9, 2019, and is jailed in New York awaiting trial.

The case includes the accusation of two of his former subordinates Luis Cárdenas and Ramón Pequeno, who are described as fugitives from justice in the United States.

Another case related to him is that of Iván Reyes, former commander of the Sensitive Investigations Unit and García’s subordinate, who appeared in this same court before Judge Cogan in February and was sentenced to 10 years in prison for drug trafficking and corruption.
